ONE of the largest contemporary exhibitions, Adding Subtractions, is running at the Bag Factory in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

The exhibition, which features 30 talented visual artists. opened yesterday and will run until July.

Adding Subtractions is an excellent combination of experienced artists and young local talent.

Among the artists exhibiting is Roger Ballen, Happy Dhlame, Nicholus Hlobo, William Kentridge, Senzo Nhlapo, Sam Nhlengethwa, Thenjiwe Nkosi, Tracey Rose, Lerato Shadi and Dinkies Sithole.

All the artists exhibiting have and individualistic way of expressing themselves in various materials.

The exhibition brings together works in various media, concepts and aesthetics. The artists have really showed an influential collectivity of found footage, assemblage, collage, series, sequencing, weaving and sampling.

These artistic strategies reflect scarce economic resources - and on the other hand they symbolise the gathering of history's fragments whether private or collective.

They have to rearrange analogue or distinct elements in order to reinforce or subvert a certain reality, thereby creating new sociopolitical and time-space relations.

These works evoke not only criticism, questions and the search for meaning, but also stimulate memories of what has been left behind.

Most works relate, even if indirectly, to their historical and cultural framework.
