Gun owners and police square off

GUN owners who failed to renew their licences before the March 31 deadline will hear tomorrow whether they can hang on to their weapons for a while longer.

The Pretoria high court has spent the last two days hearing arguments on whether to grant an urgent application to interdict the implementation date of the Firearms Control Act of 2000.

Owners who failed to renew their licences have until June 30 (Tuesday next week) before the police hunt them down.

As things stand gun owners and the police are poised for a cowboy-style face-off next week as Abios Khoele of the Black Gun Owners' Association of South Africa claimed that no policeman would dare enter a person's home to remove a legally obtained firearm.

But police spokesperson Phuti Setati said the police "will not hesitate to implement the law to the letter".

Gun owners face up to 15 years in prison if found with an illegal firearm .
