"I cannot take 10 steps backwards when I have taken two forward," he reasoned yesterday.
"I'm rated number 14 in the world. I need to fight guys like Lucian Bute (IBF champ), Mikkel Kessler (WBA holder) and IBO International champion Sakio Bika.
" I don't even want to entertain the idea of fighting Motau."
Gare, 33, from Braamfisherville near Dobsonville in Soweto, will be in action on August 7. He will bid for the third defence of the belt he won in February last year.
His manager Johnny du Plooy was hopping mad yesterday as he accused this writer of being a matchmaker. But after much convincing, common sense prevailed and Du Plooy understood after it was drummed in his head that some boxing connoisseurs had suggested the fight to Sowetan.
"I find it strange that people are calling for Gare to defend against Motau when there are so many titles that Motau can challenge for," he said.
The two fighters' promoter Blacky Seoe told Sowetan last week that he would not mind doing the fight.
But Du Plooy said what suited Seoe did not necessarily suit him as Gare's manager.
"Gare deserved better. He will not gain anything by fighting Motau. Look, Motau is a good boxer. I worked with him in the amateurs but he must climb the ladder, get rated and maybe then will he get a chance."
Motau, the current national super middleweight holder, indicated on Monday that he too had his own plans but said he was waiting for the go-ahead.
"Its up to the promoter," he said straight up. His mentor Stanely Ndlovu said:
"Faka imali uzobona - put the dollars on the table. We are there."

Carolina Nomvula Qobose, and Isaac Matlala, both 74-years, will be buried at Westpark Cemetery on Saturday and Avalon Cemetery on Saturday.
