Robbers shoot, kill 2 shopowners

TWO businessmen were killed in separate robbery incidents in the Vaal yesterday.

A 58-year-old Vereeniging businessman was in his jewellery shop when three men attempted to rob him. Police spokesperson Captain Shado Mashobane said the robbers entered the store and pretended to be clients.

Then they opened fire at the shopowner and shot him four times.

He died instantly.

"The son, however, retaliated by shooting and killing one of the robbers," Mashobane said.

Police are investigating a case of robbery and murder.

In Vanderbijlpark, a 58-year-old shopowner was also killed last night when four robbers attacked him as he closed his business.

Police spokesperson Inspector Aubrey Maopeloa said the four robbers confronted the shopowner minutes after he had closed his shop.

"They demanded that he open the shop, and when he refused they shot him on the chest. He died on the scene," Inspector Maopeloa said.
