Pretoria professional Desvonde Botes summed it up best when he stepped out of the plane at George Airport into wind and rain and declared: "And this is supposed to be the good weather this week."
From the time the first round of this Sunshine Tour event tees off at The Montagu course today, the weather is expected to deteriorate.
And yesterday's qualifying round provided a glimpse of what to expect. The rounds of three-over-par 75 by Ockie Strydom, Morne Buys and Callie Burger were good enough to lead the qualifying on a day when almost half the field posted scores of 80 and more.
Professional Jaco Ahlers is not exactly thrilled at the weather he's going to face this week. But he sees the value in it as he prepares for his debut in next month's Open Championship at Turnberry in Scotland.
"This week is going to be a great opportunity to see what the weather will probably be like in Scotland," he said.
"With weather like this you've just got to play your normal game. You can't really prepare for it because we hardly ever have weather like this in South Africa."
But Adilson da Silva, Darren Fichardt and Jean Hugo, the overall winner of this series last year, could be suited to the conditions. - Sapa
