PETROL stations could run dry in the next couple of weeks if the Chemical, Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Workers Union does not get its way.
The union has threatened to stop petroleum, pharmaceutical and paper supplies if companies in their respective sectors "continue to reject" wage increase demands by Friday, the union's deputy general secretary Thabani Mdlalose said yesterday.
The trade union is demanding a 15percent increase across all sectors while employers are only willing to part with four to six percent in the chemical sector and three to seven percent in the wood and paper sectors.
"It has therefore been declared that all sectors are currently in dispute because no agreement could be reached," said Mdlalose.
If industrial action by the union's 65000 workers goes ahead the petroleum and pharmaceutical sectors will be hardest hit, causing acute shortages of fuel and medicines.
