Mooki set to quit playing

VETERAN Kaizer Chiefs midfield genius Thabo "Tsikitsiki" Mooki looks set to hang up his soccer boots with the club discussing a new role with him.

VETERAN Kaizer Chiefs midfield genius Thabo "Tsikitsiki" Mooki looks set to hang up his soccer boots with the club discussing a new role with him.

This was announced yesterday by Bobby Motaung, Chiefs' manager of football, who announced the release of seven players at the same time.

The seven are Michael Nkambule, Sihle Mbambo, Bongani Sondhlane, Onismor Bhasera, Sandile Zuke, Gordon Gilbert and Gregory Mabena.

Mooki, the longest- serving player at Chiefs, made his debut for Amakhosi in 1994 but has not been a regular for the past two years. He has scored 40 goals in 392 appearances for the club.

Mooki could not be reached for comment, but is likely to be redeployed to the marketing department of the club.

Motaung said: "Our decision to release some players is an integral part of an overhaul process we are currently undergoing.

"Our reason for putting these players on transfer is looking at the bigger picture of their individual careers because some did not have sufficient game time last season.

"Some of these players have received offers abroad and it is the club's policy that when such opportunities arise, we allow a player a once-in- a-lifetime opportunity to grow in his career."

On Friday Chiefs announced the signing of highly talented Zimbabwean left back Zhimu Jambo on a three-year contract.

Jambo joins Amakhosi from Zimbabwean Premier League outfit Gunners.

Chiefs unveiled coach Vladimir Vermezovic last week. The Serbian made it clear he was in the country to win trophies.

He invited the media to his first training session yesterday and urged all the stakeholders at Chiefs to work with him for the success of the club.

Chiefs will parade their new players and technical staff at the Vodacom Challenge where they will come up against Orlando Pirates and visiting English Premiership side Manchester City.
