A 6-YEAR-OLD girl shooting herself at home was described as "an unnecessary tragedy".

Both GUN Free SA (GFSA) and the SA Gun Association (Saga) responded with shock to news of the tragic incident on Saturday.

GFSA chairperson Pam Crowsley said yesterday: "The girl who shot herself in the chest after finding a gun under the bed highlights the situation we are trying to eliminate."

She advised parents not to buy toy guns since children don't know the difference between the real thing and a fake. "To think of a gun as a toy is a recipe for disaster."
