DA intent on bringing changes to KZN

The Democratic Alliance in the KwaZulu-Natal legislature has called for the disbanding of two provincial government departments - the department of public works and sports and recreation.

The call comes just hours before the provincial finance MEC Ina Cronje announces her provincial budget today in Pietermaritzburg.

DA finance spokesperson Johann Krog said the provincial government had to reprioritise spending amid news that the provincial overdraft is hovering at between R3billion and R7billion, rather than a previously reported R2 billion.

He said Cronje must get the province's finances in order.

"The DA is committed to working with the new finance MEC," he said. "As former education MEC she proved herself to be a good administrator despite the massive challenges facing her department.

"We think in her new role her most crucial task is to implement fiscal discipline and rein in excessive spending on luxuries by reprioritising and if necessary restructuring KZN's government departments," Krog said.

He said the public works department was "a waste of R500 million on an annual basis".
