THE department of agriculture, environmental affairs and rural development is expected to get a lion's share of the provincial budget.

This is according to economic analyst Professor Bonke Dumisa.

Finance MEC Ina Cronjé is to announce the province's budget in Pietermaritzburg today. Last year the total budget was R51,101billion and this year it is expected to be R60,463billion.

Dumisa said rural development and the creation of jobs, fighting poverty and food security were among the country and the province's priorities.

"So it would not be surprising if the department of agriculture gets a bigger share," he said.
