EGYPT caused a major upset when they beat Italy by an odd goal to register their first 2009 Confederations Cup victory at Ellis Park Stadium last night.

The Egyptians are now a step closer to qualifying for the semifinals.

The African kings will now have to beat pointless US in their last group stage match at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Phokeng on Sunday to reach the semifinals.

Last night's match, watched by 52150 people, got off to a spectacular start with the two sides ferociously attacking each other with the hope of getting an early goal.

Egyptian goalkeeper Essam El Hadary made two dramatic saves in the 25th and 27th minutes to deny Vincenzo Iaquinta and Guiseppe Rossi respectively.

Hosni Rabbou fired home a thunderous shot that was fisted for a corner by goalie Gianluigi Buffon.

From that corner by the highly educated foot of Mohamed Aboutrika, midfielder Mohamed Homos grabbed the all-important goal with a fine header that resulted in Shosholoza reverberating throughout the stadium.
