ANKARA - A fire-fighting helicopter crashed into a dam reservoir in southwestern Turkey yesterday and two people were missing, a local official said.

The helicopter, carrying five people, was taking up water from the reservoir near Milas in Mugla province when it crashed for an unknown reason, the town's sub-governor Sahin Aslan told NTV news channel.

"The pilot and two other people were rescued. Two people are currently missing. Divers are on their way," he said.

Anatolia news agency said the Russian-made helicopter was carrying a Turkish pilot, three Russian technicians and an official from the local forestry agency.

It was one of two helicopters taking part in efforts to put out a forest blaze in neighbouring Aydin province that started on Wednesday. - Sapa-AFP
