LATE last year on a quiet Sunday morning, Soweto residents awoke to the sound of pumping engines, burning rubber and the smell of fuel wafting through the township.

WesBank had decided to introduce motor sport to Soweto. That was the starter ... now for the main course. The WesBank Street Race will be held in the township on July 19. WesBank's George Nyabadza said this year's race distance had been increased to 2,2km, centred around Chris Hani Road and has been altered to include an L-shaped extension. Nyabadza said entrance will be free and proceeds will be ploughed back to the local community. - Bruce Fraser
