New twist in the Carolina mosque killing

THEIRS was a friendship that was to last a lifetime - until the two friends started sharing the affections of a mosque official, which led to the fatal stabbing of his wife in Carolina, Mpumalanga, at the weekend.

THEIRS was a friendship that was to last a lifetime - until the two friends started sharing the affections of a mosque official, which led to the fatal stabbing of his wife in Carolina, Mpumalanga, at the weekend.

Ibrahim Muaadh, 29, is Malawian national and a muezzin - the crier who calls the faithful to prayer five times a day - at the Carolina mosque.

He said yesterday that he had been in love with his wife Sakinah Sitra, 25, and her alleged killer Sadia Mhlanga, 24, a Swazi national.

He said he and his wife had been having marital problems, which got worse after their second child died soon after birth last year.

"At the time my wife and Mhlanga were close friends." Muaadh said.

"My wife was highly affected by the death of our child and refused to have sex with me."

"She suggested that I take a second wife and then recommended that the woman be charged with the death."

The muezzin, mistakenly identified by police as an imam, said things had turned sour when Mhlanga asked Sitra to teach her about Islam but his wife refused to teach her.

Mhlanga had complained to him about Sitra.

"The three of us sat down and my wife apologised and declared her support for our affair."

Muaadh said he was in the mosque on Sunday when the congregants heard a woman screaming outside.

"We rushed outside and found my wife bleeding from the shoulder."

Muaadh said Sitra told him that Mhlanga had stabbed her. Sitra was taken to hospital but was certified dead on arrival.

Muaadh said Mhlanga fled but later turned herself in.

Police gave a different version of events, saying that Sitra had attacked Mhlanga.

Mhlanga wrested the knife from Sitra and stabbed her in the shoulder.
