Five teachers face charges for assaulting principal

A TEACHER at Senaoane Secondary School in Soweto has handed himself over to the police following the assault of the principal last month.

A TEACHER at Senaoane Secondary School in Soweto has handed himself over to the police following the assault of the principal last month.

He was among a group of teachers and others wearing South African Democratic Teachers Union T-shirts who allegedly attacked principal Josiah Tsotetsi.

Moroka police spokesperson Captain Mpande Khoza said yesterday they were anticipating more arrests.

"There were two groups involved in the assault. The teachers organised a group from outside and they stormed the principal's office and assaulted him. They also trashed his office."

He said this has brought to five the number of teachers charged for the assault. Four teachers were arrested earlier.

"They were given free bail and are expected to appear in the Protea magistrate's court on June 30. The other will appear in court today.

"They all face charges of assault, intimidation and malicious damage to property," Khoza said.

Gauteng MEC for safety Khabisi Mosunkutu said bail should be opposed.

Gauteng MEC for education Barbara Creecy said an investigation had been launched over the matter.
