Firm loses bid to retrench workers

The National Union of Metalworkers has put a strike on hold after the Labour Court ruled that car workers had been unfairly dismissed.

The National Union of Metalworkers has put a strike on hold after the Labour Court ruled that car workers had been unfairly dismissed.

Numsa applied for an urgent interdict last week to prevent General Motors SA from retrenching workers because it had not been consulted before the firings.

Judge André van Niekerk yesterday agreed with the union's claim that the dismissals in April were unfair. He ordered GMSA to compensate the workers for the unfair dismissal.

The judge also ruled that the company had to consult the union if it wanted to dismiss workers in future. - Mfundekelwa Mkhulisi
