CHAOS erupted when a fire broke out in The Workshop Mall in Durban yesterday.

Regulars at the mall and young couples had to run for their lives during the morning blaze.

It is not clear what caused the fire, but mall regulars and workers were evacuated immediately while firefighters tried to extinguish the blaze.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said paramedics rushed to the scene after receiving a call about the blaze.

"On arrival there was smoke in the building. All the people were evacuated and the fire was immediately brought under control," Banks said.

He said firefighters worked tirelessly to put out the fire. There were no injuries.

Businesses in the mall were forced to shut down for hours while firefighters tried to establish the fire's origin.

It was business as usual later in the afternoon as everything went smoothly. It is believed that the fire started at the popular Oriental Restaurant, famous in the city for its bunny chow.
