SMART make-up and accessories such a earrings, hats and necklaces can add the perfect accent to any look and the styles out there today are virtually endless.

Yet all these, and especially earrings, can be categorised into a handful of basic types and some types tend to look better on some face shapes than others.

Thinking in terms of what your basic face shape is can help you find your most flattering accessories, earrings and make-up.

ROUND:

This shape is round at the cheeks and a has a circular form. There is more of the face near the ears and gradually less curving upward and downward. The goal: to slim your face.

Long earrings can help make a round face look less round. Long drops and chandeliers are usually the most flattering earrings for this face shape. Larger angular earrings may also work well.

Stud earrings, tiny earrings and button or ball shaped earrings should be avoided for the most part since they tend to do nothing for a round face.

Round hoops might not be the most flattering earrings for a round face shape either, but longer oval or angular open designs could work.

Fashion tip: Avoid rounded, scoop necklines. Use vertical clothing lines and V-neck lines to add angles to the roundness

Make-up tip: Use bold and dark colours around the cheeks to create facial contours. Darken the eye brows a little and use colourful rich colours on the mouth.

HEART OR TRIANGULAR:

This face is wide at the forehead and cheeks, and then narrows sharply to a point at the chin. Think of this face as a triangle.

It likes jewellery that adds width to the chin to draw the eye away from the point.

Since this face shape is wider at the forehead and narrower at the chin, the most flattering earrings for this type are often wider at the bottom and narrower at the top.

Inverted triangles and regular teardrops tend to compliment the angles of a heart-shaped or triangular face.

Round hoops don't usually flatter this face shape but oval earrings might work nicely.

Fashion tip: Use V-neck and "Sweetheart" neck lines to repeat and emphasise the heart shape.

Make-up tip: Highlight the temples if you are not wearing bangs to broaden the forehead.

SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR:

The rectangular face has more length than width and has distinguishable angles. The width of the face at the forehead is the same as the chin.

This face needs jewelry that adds width and camouflages the length of the face.

Studs and button earrings tend to suit this long face shape as they bring the eye up and don't appear to be dragging the face downward.

Round hoops usually look good and chandeliers can often compliment this face shape as well, since they are wider dangling earrings. Multi-layered styles can be the most flattering longer earrings for oblong face shapes.

Fashion tip: Avoid long V-necked and vertical lines at the neckline. Use high necklines to shorten the length of the face.

Make-up tip: To shorten the face a bit, use darker foundation, powder or blusher to darken the chin.
