Throngs of KwaZulu-Natal's youth commemorated the 33rd anniversary of June 16 this weekend at events arranged by provincial authorities.
More than 5000 youngsters braved bad weather to attend a memorial event at the Oval Stadium in Kokstad where Premier Zweli Mkhize advised them to pray for the families of June 16 victims.
"Today's gathering proves that their untimely death was not in vain. We are gathered to celebrate their commitment and dedication.
"Despite the brutality of the apartheid system, they remained unfazed. Because of their quest for freedom, many communities won the right to determine who should govern and under which principles," he said.
Mkhize said the provincial government had set aside more than R52million to train 2100 people between the ages of 18 and 35 for a crime prevention project.
"We also have R700000 put aside to facilitate the implementation of youth development projects which focus on building resilience among youth at risk and vulnerable youth," he said.
Local youth leader Thabiso Zulu said 14 youths who died in violence between the IFP and the ANC in Mahehle were also honoured.
