ANCYL president Julius Malema has called on the youth to lead the fight against crime as SA prepares to celebrate the 33rd anniversary of June 16.

In his "President's blog" on the ANC Youth League's website, Malema says the youth should answer the call of former youth league president and current Deputy Minister of Police Fikile Mbalula to recruit volunteers to fight crime.

"Active citizenship starts with our young people as protagonists for peace and justice," he said.

"Youth Month and beyond must celebrate the vibrant voice of youth, by embracing the task, being footstools of our people."

Malema said that as President Jacob Zuma's administration tries to meet its goal of creating 500000 jobs by December and four million jobs by 2014, it should consider that most job seekers in SA are young people.

"More than 70 percent of young people are unemployed, and they should be a priority."

The government is forging ahead with its R787 billion stimulus - designed to trigger a recovery path for the economy that has shrunk by 6,4percent and shed 208000 jobs since January.

This week, the league will launch the newly formed National Youth Development Agency which replaces Umsobomvu Youth Fund and the National Youth Commission and kicks off with a R1billion budget.
