The stewards said this was because they were told they would be paid R250 instead of the R600 they were promised in the run-up to the tournament.
Dressed in orange reflector jackets, the stewards bayed for their manager's blood and said management should double-up as stewards.
The stewards are responsible for the safety of spectators and for making sure that they are seated correctly in the stadium.
"Why do they only tell us now, before the game, that we will be paid R250? We were promised R600. There is no way we are going to take up our positions in the stadium," said steward Siphiwe Radebe.
"Management is not being honest," said steward Tshepo Mokoena.
After lengthy negotiations the stewards returned to work.
Their manager, who only identified himself as Leroy, said he would not divulge details of the agreement they had reached.
"As you can see everyone has gone back to work now. We ironed out whatever issues we had and everyone is happy," Leroy said.
