SEIZED ASSETS UNDER GUARD

The KwaZulu-Natal asset forfeiture unit says the curator appointed by the Pieter-maritzburg high court this week has yet to determine the value of assets seized from Durban businessman Jabulani Mabaso.

Mabaso is accused of defrauding the department of education of about R200million.

Assets including the five-star Fairways Lodge at the Mount Edgecombe golf estate, four luxury cars and a number of plush homes in the province and in Gauteng have already been seized.

Yesterday asset forfeiture unit advocate Knox Molelle said the curator was responsible for determining the value of the assets .

Mabaso was arrested in November last year after long and intense investigations by the national prosecuting authority.

This week Judge King Ndlovu ordered that several assets belonging to Mabaso be seized.

It is alleged that when Mabaso's company Indiza was appointed to manage the procurement of textbooks and stationery for schools in the province, he submitted inflated invoices and fictitious purchases for goods that were never supplied.

The assets will remain under control of the curator pending the outcome of his trial on charges of fraud and theft on July 15. Mabaso has until July 7 to oppose the seizure of his assets.

Mabaso made headlines in 2007 when he was charged with failing to declare and pay the SA Revenue Service R43million in value-added tax on a R350million contract he had with the Department of Education.

He pleaded guilty in the Durban regional court to charges of fraud and admitted charging the department VAT that he did not disclose to the taxman.

He was fined R100000, suspended for five years, and his assets estimated at more than R32million were confiscated.
