pride, GLORY AT STAKE here

While Bafana Bafana virtually held South Africa to ransom, demanding R34million in incentives for representing their country in the Confederations Cup, boxers continue to fight for national titles with pride despite being paid peanuts.

While Bafana Bafana virtually held South Africa to ransom, demanding R34million in incentives for representing their country in the Confederations Cup, boxers continue to fight for national titles with pride despite being paid peanuts.

They know too well that getting respect and recognition back home will pave the way to a brighter future internationally.

There is action aplenty in the square ring this weekend. Two belts - a South African and an African - will be contested at East London's Orient Theatre and the Graceland Casino in Mpumalanga tonight and tomorrow respectively.

Promoter S'phatho Handi's Mamali Promotions will present the SA super bantamweight championship between belt holder, Macbute Sinyabi and Luyanda Mrawuli at the East London venue tonight.

Hammer-fisted Sinyabi from Mdantsane boasts 11 stoppages against one defeat while Mrawuli, also from Mdantsane, has 10 wins, three defeats and two draws. Mrawuli suffered a majority points decision against Oscar Chauke for the same belt in 2007. His fight against Sinyabi will be televised live on Blow by Blow tonight at 10pm.

The action continues in Secunda where "Golden Boy" Isaac Chilembe and David "Bassaja" Kitooke will fight it out for the WBO Africa light heavyweight vacant belt tomorrow night.

These two gladiators from Malawi and Uganda respectively, are trained here by Colin Nathan and Harold Volbrecht. Both fighters are aware that victory will earn the winner recognition from Puerto Rico - the WBO's headquarters.

Chilembe made an impression last year by winning the African Boxing Union super middleweight belt. He has the talent, skill and ability to win any genuine world title.

"I still want to improve and get some experience. I've got to be strong because there are big guys out there. So, ja, it will be a big challenge for me," he said.

Their fight will top a five-bout bill to be presented by Golden Gloves.

All the fights will be broadcast by SuperSport from 8pm.
