The ANC's parliamentary caucus and Youth League will work together to make Mandela Day a reality, according to ANC chief whip Mathole Motshekga.

Nelson Mandela will turn 91 on July 18.

Motshekga said in Parliament yesterday that Mandela's values and his example of dedication to the service of humanity was a shining example to people all over the world".

An international campaign for Mandela Day had been initiated by the Nelson Mandela Foundation and related organisations.

"It will be celebrated on July 18 each year and will give people in South Africa and all over the world the opportunity to do something good to help others.

"We committed ourselves in response to the state of the nation address [by President Jacob Zuma] that on July 18 we should commemorate Mandela Day through community work programmes organised and executed through our constituency offices."

Motshekga said he had asked ANC MP Buti Manamela to put together a team that would prepare a proposal on the community work programme.

"In this regard the ANC Youth League has assured us it will take the lead and mobilise the people and ensure Mandela Day becomes a day on which the lives of our people are concretely improved." - Sapa
