THE Competition Tribunal will hear a complaint brought against Pioneer Foods by the Competition Commission, it was announced yesterday.

The commission has alleged that Pioneer was part of a bread cartel involved in price fixing, fixing the date of implementation of price increases and dividing markets in contravention of the Competition Act.

Distributors of bread in Western Cape telephonically complained to the Competition Commission about the alleged fixing of the price of bread in Western Cape.

Bread producers Premier and Tiger Brands applied for immunity from prosecution in terms of the corporate leniency programme, and were granted conditional immunity after agreeing to assist the commission in its investigation and in proceedings before the tribunal.

Tiger Brands settled the case with the commission and paid a penalty of R98 million, representing 5,7 percent of its turnover in 2006. - I-Net Bridge
