The crisis at the SABC deepened last night following the resignation of three more board members, bringing the number of staffers who have jumped ship to six.

Bheki Khumalo, Andile Mbeki and Desmond Golding are the latest to quit after Peter Vundla and Christina Qunta, who resigned two months ago. Chairperson Khanyi Mkonza quit last week.

This means that the board cannot form a quorum. Last night Parliament's communications committee chairperson Ishmael Vadi said the fate of the nine remaining members would be decided next week.

With the latest resignations, the board had lost its legitimacy as it was operating without a chairperson since Mkonza and her deputy Qunta resigned.

"It is quite possible that more board members will resign in the next few days. We will get a better picture next Thursday when the remaining members report to Parliament," Vadi said.
