BAFANA Bafana must be smoking their socks. What in the world makes them think they deserve a bonus of R1,5million each? It's even more preposterous because they will not win the Confederations Cup, just as they haven't won any cup lately.

BAFANA Bafana must be smoking their socks. What in the world makes them think they deserve a bonus of R1,5million each? It's even more preposterous because they will not win the Confederations Cup, just as they haven't won any cup lately.

Remember their threats just before the African Cup of Nations in Egypt in 2006? And they did not score a single goal there. Safa should have called their bluff and conceded to the bonus if they win, but not a cent if they lose. We all know who would have the last laugh.

When former president Thabo Mbeki questioned the name Bafana Bafana, everyone thought he was being a pedantic party pooper.

This was a term of endearment for the agile boys who made us proud in 1996 by winning the African Cup of Nations and qualifying for the 1998 World Cup.

Today the term Bafana Bafana refers to moronic little boys who do not appreciate the magnitude of hosting the Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup.

This is the first World Cup on African soil and our biggest ambassadors are behaving like spoilt brats.

Of course players must be remunerated but to threaten a strike at a time when the eyes of the world are on us is myopic. Players of indescribable calibre have descended with one mission in mind - to decimate their opponents and do their countries proud.

I bet the visitors are tossing and turning while visualising the glorious moment when they lift the trophy to rapturous applause.

They have formulated a plan and will execute it with determination because that triumph won't fall down like manna from heaven. They have to work for it.

Are our boys doing the same? Oh no! They have taken their eyes off the ball, literally and figuratively, and are preoccupied with their bank accounts. What a shame.

Perhaps we should not throw a cadenza over the team's despicable behaviour. It has become predictable. They have long lost their killer instinct, that hunger to win.

From African giants to African wimps, theirs is a sordid tale of defeat.

What have they delivered in the past few years? Nothing. Winning friendly matches against a weak and lowly Mauritius does not count. Perhaps moving up the Fifa world rankings from 77th to 72nd place and from 23rd to 17th place in the African rankings has gone to their heads. If this constitutes a major achievement then we are in big trouble.

These guys have the temerity to make demands when they failed to qualify for the 2010 Cup of Nations in Angola.

While we are at it, let's face up to the fact that were it not for our status as the host nation we would not feature in next year's World Cup.

In Ghana last year, Bafana deepened the nation's gloom with their first round ejection from the Afcon tournament.

They did not win a single match. At that time, Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile made the most bizarre comment, "while others may see the team's performance as dismal, it should be understood as to what is it that the country wanted to achieve from Ghana..." Huh?

It is precisely because we expect so little of Bafana that we keep lowering the bar and making excuses for them. That is why their attitude stinks. They do not hesitate to embarrass this wonderful nation at a time when we need them most. Sies!
