COPS HUNT TAXI KILLERS

KWAZULU-NATAL police were yesterday hot on the heels of suspects wanted in connection with the killing of three taxi operators in Nongoma last week.

KWAZULU-NATAL police were yesterday hot on the heels of suspects wanted in connection with the killing of three taxi operators in Nongoma last week.

Community safety and liaison MEC Bheki Cele was confident that the police were going to bring them to book.

He said the taxi industry had heeded his call and come forward with the names of those responsible.

"We are certainly going to arrest them sooner than they think.

"We've got the names; we know who they are and where they live, so it's just a matter of catching them," said Cele.

He had promised to lift the suspension of taxi operations provided the names of the alleged killers were revealed and arrests were made.

He insisted yesterday that as soon as arrests are made the operations could resume.

The department of transport had shut down about 25 Nongoma Taxi Association routes as soon as violence erupted in the area as per a 2007 peace agreement.

Meanwhile, Cele confirmed that four people were arrested yesterday in connection with an unrelated attack where school teacher Busisiwe Simelane was killed.

"Yes, we have arrested four people and confiscated five illegal firearms.

"More arrests are imminent pending the ongoing investigations," said Cele.
