THE KwaZulu-Natal department of education has appointed independent prosecutors to "formulate and draft charges" against five teachers alleged to have sexually abused and harassed 13 young girls at Makhumbuza High School in Umlazi, Durban.

MEC for education Senzo Mchunu said the prosecutors were expected to start work by the end of this week.

"They will prepare for thehearing and this includes a series of consultations with witnesses.

"The prosecution team is led by M Memka of Memka and Associates.

"M Sabela of Cele, Khama and Naidoo Attorneys will be the presiding officers in the matter," Mchunu said.

He said the charges would be served on the teachers once the prosecution team had finalised consultations with witnesses.

The hearings are expected to start in two weeks' time.

Mchunu said the department had decided to appoint a prosecution team after the preliminary investigation findings recommended that charges of misconduct be instituted against the five teachers.

The allegations of sexual harassment first surfaced on April 24 this year when a group of girl pupils at the school made the startling accusations.
