TWO weeks ago, on May 26, I ashamedly witnessed members of my community taking the law in their own hands. These people brutally assaulted a member of our community for attempting to rob one of the houses.
The man was hit with all sorts of objects not designed to hit any living creature with. Things were thrown at him until he breathed his last.
This happened just a few streets from my home.
I could not eat for days after witnessing the incident because I was so badly affected
On Sunday June 7 I was told of another criminal act in which the perpetrator or perpetrators smashed the window of a house and stole a DVD, comforter, some meat and a cold drink. One could conclude many things from this event, such as hunger, poverty and so on.
When one thinks about the solidarity that was the order of the day among Africans in the old days, when people couldn' t sleep if others had empty stomachs, a tear runs down my black face.
I do not mind being called an advocate of morality and I want to appeal to our community members to all work together towards a culture of morality.
And that we also all learn to face our daily struggles of poverty and hunger - without selfishness.
If we all commit ourselves to doing this, we will indeed have a country that all of us will feel proud to belong to.
South Africa would be a place with a more human face, where crime, rape, assaults and inhuman acts of all kinds will no longer exist.
