Cousin shocked to find couple dead at home

VAAL Rand police have opened two inquest dockets after the bodies of a couple were discovered at a house in De Deur.

Captain Shado Mashobane said the police were informed by a relative yesterday about the gruesome deaths.

He said Rofhiaa Mphephu and Tshikenene Ramabula were last seen alive on Sunday afternoon.

A cousin who shared their house told police he had gone away for the weekend.

"His cousin said he had slept elsewhere and on his return he found the house locked."

Mashobane said the man knocked on the door and after getting no response he went to Mphephu's parents' house nearby to ask about his whereabouts and they said they last saw him on Sunday.

"He then broke the door down with the permission of the parents and found the couple were dead."

Ramabula's half-naked body was found lying on a bed and Mphephu was found hanging from the ceiling.

Police said they could not rule out the possibility that Mphephu had killed his lover and then himself. No suicide note was found.

Mashobane said police suspected that Ramabula had been poisoned.

"We found white foam oozing out of her mouth," said Mashobane.

Police are now waiting for postmortem results.
