THE Government has won rare praise from military veterans of various political parties after Deputy Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene met them to talk about special pensions.

Nene met the Azanian People's Liberation Army (Apla), uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Association, the Azanian National Liberation Army and the Struggle Veterans Action Committee veterans last week.

The veterans have long complained of being ignored by the government of former president Thabo Mbeki.

The meeting followed this year's amendment of the Special Pensions Act, which now allows veterans who were over 30 but under 35 on December 1 1996 to get a special pension.
