MORE than a quarter of KwaZulu-Natal's 10million people go to bed on empty stomachs.

This emerged on Saturday at Nkandla when safety MEC Bheki Cele revealed that according to the latest statistics, 3,1million people in the province went to bed hungry.

Cele said this was one of the challenges faced by President Jacob Zuma, who was present.

"These are not just statistics but people who are counting on you not to let them down," Cele said.

Zuma did not answer directly, but promised fast rural development . "I regard myself as your representative and will never forget you," he said.
