SOWETAN hit the streets of Johannesburg to investigate the scale of film and music piracy and found illegal DVDs for sale on almost every corner of the city centre.

SOWETAN hit the streets of Johannesburg to investigate the scale of film and music piracy and found illegal DVDs for sale on almost every corner of the city centre.

Pirated DVDs and CDs are fiercely marketed along Bree and Noord streets, where local and international discs are widely available.

Lundi, White Wedding and Madluputhu 1, 2, 3 are peddled alongside pornographic movies for only R10 in full view of passers-by, including children.

Some traders packed up when they saw Sowetan's photographer taking pictures, but they had no fear of the cops.

Brisk business took place around a police car in Noord Street, where officers did nothing about the illicit activity.

None of the traders would reveal where the pirated goods had been sourced.
