YESTERDAY was a big shock and big day for songstress Lira.

YESTERDAY was a big shock and big day for songstress Lira.

She was awarded a surprise Gold disc by her recording company Sony/BM at Kaya FM studios in Newtown, Johannesburg, live on air.

The award had been kept as a secret. The only time Lira knew about it was when she was being interviewed on air by radio host T-Bose.

She was surprised by the huge media presence, with cameras ready to click.

Members of the media were ushered into the studio without warning. Only then did the Sama award-winning star realise what was going on.

The presence of a big team from her recording company, though, must have given her a hint of what was going on. "Oh! This cannot be true. What is going on here. I cannot believe this," she said on air.

Lira was awarded a Gold disc for achieving more than 20000 album sales for her album, Soul in Mind, which romped home with four Samas recently.

"Lira is one of the artists the station has featured prominently and worked with. She is a talented artist and Kaya listeners love her music," said Kaya FM managing director Greg Maloka.

He likened Lira's career path to that of the late Miriam Makeba.

Maloka told Sowetan that Lira's humility, presence and the graceful way she handles herself could easily be compared to that of Mama Africa.
