SanTana to wield the axe

SOUTH Africans will be waiting with bated breath this morning as Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana unveils the final squad to represent the country at the Confederations Cup.

SOUTH Africans will be waiting with bated breath this morning as Bafana Bafana coach Joel Santana unveils the final squad to represent the country at the Confederations Cup.

Santana, who is under pressure to start delivering, will drop six players from the current provisional squad of in camp in Parktown.

The six players likely to be dropped are Thulasizwe Mbuyane, Lance Davids, Matthew Booth, Innocent Mdledle and Mzuvukile Tom.

Besides the Confederations Cup, the team will also play against Poland in an international friendly at the rebuilt Orlando Stadium on Saturday.

Steven Pienaar, the team's dribbling wizard, reckons Bafana Bafana must put up a great show against Poland to win South Africans' confidence ahead of the Festival of Champions.

"That's the only way for us to go in order to win the support.

"We have to get a positive result to show we are serious about the Confederations Cup," said Pienaar.

Pienaar this week visited Maponya mall with other Bafana players to mobilise support for Poland's game and the Confederations Cup.

Santana was also in attendance during the Soweto tour which was organised by Adidas, the technical sponsors of the team.

Other players present were Katlego Mashego, Brian Baloyi, Innocent Mdledle, Bongani Khumalo, Morgan Gould, MacBeth Sibaya and Matthew Booth.

"In soccer, people always judge you based on your last game. We must do well against Poland since it will be the last game before the Confederations Cup," explained Pienaar.

The roof of the mall almost came down when the Bafana Bafana entourage was ushered in by Adidas representatives, Mike Ntombela and Bob Maphosa.

The crowd also won themselves tickets to Saturday's game and various products of the German sports wear company.

The second group of players was in Orlando at Sy's tavern with Castle Lager and the third group with Absa at the banking giant's headquarters in downtown Johannesburg.

Bafana Bafana has moved up five places to number 72 in the latest Fifa World Rankings released yesterday.
