NELSON Mandela met a group of students yesterday ahead of the launch of Mandela Day on his birthday next month.

"They will return to their schools and communities as 46664 youth ambassadors promoting the spirit of Mandela Day, and encourage their peers to adopt the principles of the Mandela Day Student Charter," Achmat Dangor, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Foundation said.

The group of local and US pupils, aged between 11 and 19, were all winners of high school competitions requiring pupils to submit projects on the life and legacy of Mandela.

The pupils will "engage in a youth dialogue over four days, discussing Mandela's legacy", Dangor said.

"Their discussions will culminate in the drafting of a Mandela Day Students' Charter," he added. - Sapa
