Legal company repays client

Busi Magasela's bank account has swelled by R4938 that had been wrongfully debited by Legal and Tax for the past five years.

Busi Magasela's bank account has swelled by R4938 that had been wrongfully debited by Legal and Tax for the past five years.

She was refunded three days after Consumer Line stepped in.

Magasela, 47, of Meadowlands in Soweto, said she took legal cover in 2000 with Legal and Tax to take care of her for future legal needs.

Legal and Tax service covered motor vehicle accidents, unfair dismissal or a building dispute and offered immediate answers to any legal enquiry.

"But they didn't help me when I asked them to find out why my provident fund was paid short by R10000," Magasela said.

She said she decided to cancel her policy in 2004 when Legal and Tax refused to represent her in an assault case she was involved in.

"The case didn't proceed because the complainant withdrew the charges after realising she was the guilty party."

Magasela cancelled her policy but Legal and Tax continued to debit her account.

"Since 2004 I have been battling without luck to get all those deductions back," she said.

Magasela said the management at Legal and Tax acknowledged they were wrongfully debiting her account instead that of another client, Judith Mdluli, but did not bother to refund her money.

Cedric Naiker, a senior consultant at Legal and Tax, confirmed they had investigated the matter but could not authorise a refund.

Naiker reported the matter to senior management for approval and payment was made three days later.

"Thank you for helping. I got my money. This came at a time when I needed money to pay my daughter's tertiary fees," a grateful Magasela said.
