They said the men lured Mohamed Sayed's security guard into believing that they were detectives who wanted to speak to Sayed about an investigation.
Sayed, co-owner of the family's Spar in the Greytown city centre, had returned home that evening and was having dinner when the suspects entered the house and ordered him and two domestic workers to lie on the floor.
Police spokesman Henry Budhram said Sayed and the domestic workers were robbed of their cellphones, before the robbers took Sayed at gunpoint to the bedrooms and searched for money.
"It is believed that Sayed managed to get his firearm and shoot at the suspects.
"It is further believed that a shootout then ensued between the robbers and Sayed," Budhram said.
Sayed was fatally wounded in the shootout and two of suspects were also wounded.
"All three suspects were seen fleeing from the scene in a car that was waiting for them with a fourth suspect," Budhram said.
Budhram said Sayed's firearm, a 9mm pistol and a police cap, left by the suspects during the shooting, was also found on the scene.
He said that the police were appealing to anyone with information on the suspects to contact investigating officer. Detective Inspector Swami Pillay on 082-556-1380.
Budhram said they believed that the motive was robbery because Sayed and his family owned businesses, inluding the local Spar outlet in the area.
