Safety teams for schools suggested

THE Mpumalanga government has been advised to establish safety teams to ensure safety at schools.

Speaking at the School Safety Indaba in eMalahleni yesterday, researcher for the Institute for Democracy in South Africa Yvette Geyer said safety teams would contribute in minimizing crime at schools.

Geyer said teachers only provided technical academic skills to pupils while safety teams were vital in diverting pupils' attention from committing crime.

She said schools should become community centres where a lot of activities took place to keep the minds of pupils focused.

She said pupils did not just smoke dagga because they were happy. "Situations in their environments lead them to misbehaving.

"Teachers should therefore be creative enough to inspire the learners with activities like tests, sports and art."

Police Acting Commissioner Rex Machabi said the usual crimes at school were violence, gang activities, fighting and vandalism.
