Large-sized heads of America

THE busts of four American presidents carved into the side of Mount Rushmore, in South Dakota, hold the record as the world's largest sculpture. The heads of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson and Theodore Roosevelt stand about 18m high. Had their whole bodies been carved as well, each man would have stood 140m tall. The project took 14 years to complete, but sculptor Gutzon Borglum did not live to see its completion, dying in 1941, just before it was finished. His son, Lincoln, who had worked along with his father, finished the project for him.
