PETRUS Mkhwanazi, one of six Krugersdorp prison warders accused of murdering three inmates, is now a free man.

Mkhwanazi was acquitted after his defence counsel applied for his discharge, saying there was no evidence against him.

The application was not opposed by the state who have called more than ten witnesses, with none of them implicating Mkhwanazi.

The state closed its case yesterday and accused No2 Regan Rudidge was the first to take the witness stand in the defence's case.

Rudidge, Sandile Kleinbooi, Cleopas Mfusi, Simphiwe Shabangu and Donald Letsoamotse faced murder charges after allegedly killing three prisoners in 2007. - Dudu Busani
