Hoskins praises Boks, Bulls

THE Vodacom Super 14 champion Bulls and IRB Sevens World Series champion Springboks were congratulated by Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union yesterday.

THE Vodacom Super 14 champion Bulls and IRB Sevens World Series champion Springboks were congratulated by Oregan Hoskins, president of the South African Rugby Union yesterday.

The Sevens Springboks clinched the IRB World Series in Edinburgh, securing the title by 30 points from runners-up Fiji, while the Vodacom Bulls produced a record-breaking victory in a Vodacom Super 14 final by beating the Chiefs 61-17 in Pretoria on Saturday.

"South African Rugby can be immensely proud of the achievements this weekend and on behalf of Saru I'd like to congratulate and applaud Paul Treu and his Sevens squad and Frans Ludeke and the players of the Vodacom Bulls," said Hoskins.

"We are blessed with an outstanding generation of players and when you consider we are also the IRB world champions this is a very good time to be a South African rugby supporter.

"We can also take great pride in the performance of the Royal XV in going down to a late defeat against the British and Irish Lions in Phokeng.

"The spirit in which they played the game and the skill and character they showed was a credit to their provinces and a demonstration of the depth of rugby talent we enjoy."

The Lions's 37-25 victory at the start of their 10-match tour set in train the last great adventure in world rugby - the only extended tour left in the game - with the tourists now heading to Ellis Park tomorrow to meet the Xerox Lions before taking on the Vodacom Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

"We have the privilege of hosting the British and Irish Lions with the chance for our provinces to measure themselves against the top international players," said Hoskins. - Sapa
