Sowetan has learnt that the match between Orlando Pirates and Manchester City will be played in Polokwane. The opening match of the tournament - which also features Kaizer Chiefs - takes place at Peter Mokaba Stadium on July 18.

Sowetan was reliably told that the Limpopo government tabled a proposal to the organisers of the tournament Sail Group to host the clash.

"The organisers were in Polokwane on Friday where an agreement was signed. They also used the opportunity to inspect the facilities," said a source.

South African Football Association national executive committee member in Limpopo Nakedi Lekota was excited about the province hosting international soccer.

Already people of Limpopo cannot wait to see the big names from Manchester City such as Robinho, Elano, Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Sowetan can also reveal that the North West government also bid for the opening match, which they wanted played in Mmabatho.

The second match between Chiefs and City will be played on July 21 at a venue still to be announced. The venue of the final, which is scheduled for July 25 is also still to be determined.

The venue for the Soweto derby on June 23 has already been confirmed and the match will be played at the new Nelson Mandela Sports Complex in Port Elizabeth.
