THE City of Johannesburg might have won the battle against striking nurses but the war continues on another front with paramedics.
Emergency medical services personnel are threatening to strike if the council does not implement the Occupation Specific Dispensation.
On Wednesday the municipality obtained a court interdict ordering nurses to return to work since their strike action was illegal and unprotected. They were also instructed not to turn away patients at clinics.
City health department spokesperson Nkosinathi Nkabinde said: "We urge all the nurses to return to work to serve the community and the poor, in particular, who are suffering as a result of the strike."
Meanwhile, hundreds of paramedics employed by the city gathered at the Brixton fire station on Thursday to protest against slow salary and career progression.
The paramedics threatened to strike if the municipality continues to ignore their demands.
Zanele Ndlovu, a paramedic and member of Samwu, said "the municipality promised to increase our salaries before May but this has not happened".
"Nobody has explained the delay."
