Others are Ruben Ramolefi, Caster Semenya, Sifiso Nhlapo, Roland Schoeman and Hezekiel "Tokkie" Sepeng.

But there was no place in the provisional team for the Hendrick Ramaala, a former New York Marathon champion, who last week Ramaala accused the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee of reneging on their promise to reimburse athletes money they spent in preparing for the Beijing Olympics.

Gideon Sam, Sascoc president, in naming the team early, showed the seriousness of their intent to achieve 12 Olympic medals and a top five Paralympic placing in London in 2012.

Athletics and swimming, traditionally the two strongest codes, make up the bulk of the squads, but Sam said indivi-duals from lesser profiled codes had also been identified.

Sascoc chief executive Turby Reddy said: "Sascoc will be responsible for the financial support of these two squads and the funding, approved by the National Lottery, is separate from the R400million National Lottery funding agreed on earlier in the year for identified federations."

Boxing is not represented in the squads announced on Thursday. Identification will only be completed after the African Championships in Mauritius in July.

Some of the potential medallists include track and field athletes Janice Josephs (long jump), Tsholofelo Thipe (400m), Sunette Viljoen (javelin), canoeist Shaun Rubenstein (flatwater), rower Ramon di Clemente (coxless), swimmers Jean Basson (200m freestyle), Darian Townsend (200m).
