Rising judo star Lungiswa Nante hopes to announce her international arrival in the sport in style by doing well at the World Student Games in Serbia from July 1 to 12.
The team was announced by Sanele Madlala, pictured, University Sports South Africa president, after an executive committee meeting in Kempton Park on Friday.
Nante, 22, said being selected "is a great honour for me, it will be my first trip outside South Africa and I want to make it a memorable one by adding to the success of my country.
"I have been training hard for months in preparation for the competition in Belgrade. Naturally, it's gonna be tough but I'm ready to ascend the world stage in style."
The multiple champion, who started competing in judo in 2006, is a B-tech pubic management student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, Bellville campus.
She is also the Student Representative Council deputy chairperson at the campus. Before defecting to judo, Nante took part in athletics, netball and hockey.
"I love judo and hope I will one day compete at the Olympic Games. The problem with other codes is that they used to clash with my studies," said Nante.
Other team members are Jeanne Mari Prinsloo, Amanda-Lee Grobler, Natasha Stefanie Glassford, Shaun Neil Woodman, Ernest Christian Louw, Stefan Wolfgang Pfeffer and Gideon Jacobus van Zyl.
Madlala said: "We are finalising the other teams like soccer, athletics, swimming, the teams will be announced later this week.
"We will be sending strong teams to Belgrade, most of the top countries like England, United States of America, Jamaica and Australia use the World Student Games to prepare their athletes for the Olympics Games.
"Here in South Africa, big names like Mbulaeni Mulaudzi, Hezekiel Sepeng, Ruben Ramolefi, Llewellyn Herbert and Elizne Naude have also featured in the World Student Games where they won medals."
