Cops shoot suspect and MEC is furious

KWAZULU-NATAL MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Bheki Cele responded angrily to the news that police officers had killed a suspect on the way to a police station.

It is alleged that Ulundi police arrested Lungisa Biyela, 38, at his home in Melmoth in Zululand but fatally shot him while in transit.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Jay Naicker said the suspect, who was wanted by the police in connection with a series of hijackings, agreed to show police where the vehicles were kept.

On the way he asked them to stop so he could urinate but drew a firearm. Naicker said the police then shot him in chest.

"A revolver was recovered from the suspect. The ICD will look at the docket to see what transpired," he said.

An incensed Cele said he expected police to give a full report or face arrest.

"Surely the police would have searched Biyela before taking him away?"

"We are not encouraging the police to be trigger happy when we say they must not die with their guns in their holsters. I also want to know why his family was not informed about his death."

The family had arrived at the cells to look for Biyela but could not find him. - Mhlaba Memela
