A North West school has been shut down by labour inspectors who consider it a health and safety hazard, the Department of Labour said yesterday.

Inspectors, reacting to a tip-off, visited Ipokeng Primary School in Gelukspan, outsideMafikeng,on Wednesday. "Educators and learners were in classrooms with broken windows, and had no access to toilets as they were in a bad state," said labour spokesperson Page Boikanyo.

"The school was declared a safety hazard to both learners and educators, and after considerations this was the only option left."

The department's provincial executive manager Andile Makapela said the school would be opened once it had been fixed and was in acceptable conditions. - Sapa
