FIFTEEN pupils narrowly escaped death when two taxis taking them to school were involved in an accident with a truck.

Rescuers said the taxis were heading down Church Street in Pietermaritzburg when the truck came from a side street and hit one of the taxis. The second taxi crashed into the back of the truck. Rescuers had to use the jaws of life to remove a driver trapped in his taxi.

Derrick Banks of ER24 said one person was in a serious condition while 18 others have moderate injuries.

This was the third serious accident involving school children over the past seven days in KwaZulu-Natal. Last week, four pupils died when a bakkie taking them to school overturned in Greytown. On Tuesday morning, five people including two pupils died in a horrific accident involving a bakkie and a bus near Mpumalanga township, west of Durban.
